Check Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Changing your old and outdated carbon monoxide alarm should be at the top of your priority list today.

The reason that we bring up carbon monoxide alarms as being a topic of urgency at this time is because it has come to our attention that recently there was a man in Barrie who came home after working the night shift to find his two children and wife suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. His 10 months old son passed away in the hospital, and his daughter and wife are being hospitalised. A similar situation can affect the lives of any one of us if we do not take the necessary precautions. That is why it is crucially important for us to know about carbon monoxide safety, as well as having a look at our own carbon monoxide alarm to make sure it is still doing its job and keeping us safe.

The Dangers and Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and extremely poisonous gas. This very dangerous gas is produced as a by-product of combustion when a fuel burning appliance that uses natural gas, wood, oil, kerosene, or propane, doesn’t have enough air to fire up properly. When this occurs, the gas can build up in a room and will cause injury or even death to humans or animals occupying the space.

The symptoms that you may feel when exposed to carbon monoxide are nausea, headaches, dizziness, confusion, sudden loss of consciousness, etc. In serious cases, carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to brain damage or death. When knowing the symptoms of the silent killer that is carbon monoxide it may become clear as to why you should take the correct measures in checking your home’s carbon monoxide alarm.

Precautions to Take to Avoid Exposure to Carbon Monoxide

  • All homes must have at least one carbon monoxide alarm installed by law. Homeowners who do not abide by this may be fined. Although the law states that you must have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in your home, we recommend having one installed on each floor of your home.
  • Check the expiration date of your carbon monoxide alarm. Any alarms which were made prior to 2008 should be replaced as soon as possible. CO alarms need to be replaced every seven to ten years (varies by brand).
  • Change the batteries in your carbon monoxide alarm annually. This does not apply to CO alarms which sealed lithium batteries that don’t ever need to be replaced.
  • Fuel burning appliances should be maintained and inspected on a regular basis. It is important that you have a licensed technician check on your furnace, water heater, fireplace and any other fuel burning appliance in your home annually to conclude whether or not they are in safe working condition and have proper ventilation.

If you or a family member living in your home are experiencing the symptoms associated with carbon monoxide poisoning or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, everyone should evacuate the building immediately and the fire department or 911 should be called right away. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a very serious matter and should be treated accordingly when it comes to taking safety measures against it.

Do I Need A New Furnace?

Knowing whether or not you need a new furnace is not always a simple judgement, so let’s learn the key signs indicating that you need an upgrade.

If your furnace is broken down and no longer operates then obviously you are in need of a new furnace unit. What if your furnace is still working? You may still need a new furnace even if your current unit is still running. A new furnace could save energy, save money from wasted operating time, and be the solution to the inconsistent heating problems you may be experiencing. Replacing a furnace can be a simple decision or a tough one, but luckily we can help you decide.

If your old furnace unit has a metal vent with a gap above the furnace, or a pilot light then it would be a good idea to upgrade to a new furnace unit as soon as you have the chance. If this isn’t the case and your current unit is still working then figuring out if you need a new furnace might be a little more tricky.

Should my high efficiency furnace be replaced?

On the side of every furnace there should be a label indicating its efficiency as a percentage. If that percentage is greater than 90% then you have a high efficiency furnace. A high efficiency furnace shouldn’t need to be replaced unless it has any noticeable problems regarding its operation.

What if my furnace heats my home inconsistently?

If your home is not heating rooms evenly, making some rooms hot while others are cold, check to see if all the vents are open. You can try and balance out the temperature in your home by closing the vents in vacant rooms and opening the ones in rooms that are used. If you had to open or close multiple vents then it could take a couple days before the house sets into its new balanced temperature.

A second option would be to turn your furnace fan off auto mode and make it so that it is running constantly. The downside to doing this would mean that it increases your electricity usage and decrease the lifespan of your motor.

If these two solutions do not fix your problem then it could mean that your furnace is oversized for your home and therefore does not distribute air correctly. If you do have a furnace that is too large for your home then you surely need a new furnace.

You might need a new furnace and water heater

If your home has an exterior chimney with the water heater being vented to the chimney, then your water heater should be replaced to a brand new sealed combustion water heater at the same time that you replace your furnace unit. If these appliances aren’t changed simultaneously then your chimney will cool down since there’s no furnace being vented through it, and the water heater could potentially backdraft and allow for combustion products to enter the home which can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

This replacement can often be done inexpensively if you are renting your water heater unit. If you do not choose to replace both your water heater and furnace then it would be in your best interest to have carbon monoxide detectors in your home for safety measures.

You can do so fairly inexpensively, if like most people you rent your water heater. Your old water heater can be replaced for a brand new conventional vent, power vent, or even a tankless on demand water heater. If for some reason you can’t replace your water heater at the same time, ensure that you have carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Everyone needs to have these detectors according to a fairly recent law.

If after reading our guidelines regarding furnace replacement you have decided that you need a new furnace, don’t hesitate to contact us and rid yourself of all of your HVAC problems. We will provide efficient and quick furnace replacement performed by our highly trained and experienced technicians. We offer a variety of brands and programs that will ensure that we meet your needs and your budget. You can purchase your brand new high efficiency furnace, finance it on a monthly basis, or sign up for our great rent to own program. Our furnace rental program requires no money down, no credit checks, three months of free rent, lifetime warranty and service.

Give us a call at 647-847-2998 or fill out our online request form and we will be happy to assist you with your request.

Tankless Water Heater Benefits

Learn about the many tankless water heater benefits and improve your living space for the better.

If you’re looking to upgrade and make some positive changes to your home then looking at tankless water heater benefits is definitely a great start. By upgrading to a brand new tankless water heater you’ll be able to save money, save energy, reduce waste, and conserve space. By making just this one change to your home you will already be able to improve your family’s living space in four different ways.

Save Money

Using less energy also means spending less money. Your brand new tankless water heater will use 30 to 50 percent less energy, and these savings will also be reflected in the price on your utility bill.

Save Energy

A standard tank-based water heater will heat water that will then sit in the tank, although there may be no use for it. One of the differences between a tank-based unit and a tankless unit is that the tankless unit will only heat water when it is going to be used. You will then be able to save energy since your water heater will not operate until you need to use hot water. One of the many great tankless water heater benefits is saving energy no matter if it’s when taking a shower or washing the dishes. You will be saving energy with every use of hot water.

Reduce Waste

Tankless water heaters should be the number one choice for those who are environmentally conscious. Since tankless units only heat water when it’s necessary, they will be able to stop water from going to waste.

Conserve Space

As a homeowner, you should always be looking to make the best out of the space you have in your home. One of the greatest tankless water heater benefits is that they don’t require much floor space for their use. A tankless water heater is typically mounted on a wall and can even fit under a sink or in a closet. Tankless water heaters are perfect for those living in smaller homes or apartments.

If you have any further questions regarding tankless water heater benefits or are looking to upgrade to a brand new tankless on demand water heater unit, then don’t hesitate to contact DeMark Home Ontario today. We offer a free installation done by our highly trained and experienced technicians, 2 months free, and the best rental rates in Ontario. Give us a call at  647-847-2998 or fill out our online request form and we will be happy to assist you.

HVAC Spring Tips

Spring is almost here. This means that soon it will be time to switch over from heating your home to cooling it instead! And, with warmer weather, it can actually be more confusing to decide best HVAC spring tips.

Do you turn it on? Do you turn all of your systems off? Do you open the windows?

Well, here are the spring tips you need to keep in mind when it comes to your HVAC equipment.

Change the Filters

AC filters work hard to remove contaminants like dust, pet hair and pet dander from the air, but they can get clogged causing your air conditioning unit to work harder than it needs to and decreasing its efficiency. To get the most out of your AC unit, you should change the air filters every month or two, depending on your location and living conditioners.

Clean the Outside

Head outside and clean the compressor. This unit can get covered with fallen debris, like leaves, cones and plant parts, or even get clogged with floating seeds and fluffy seed heads. Blocked airflow means less efficient operation and, in extreme cases, can make your unit work so hard that it gives out. Keep grass clippings away from your condenser and consider scheduling a thorough cleaning with your local heating and cooling contractor.

A Programmable Thermostat

If you do not have a programmable thermostat, have one installed this spring. You will enjoy better control of the temperature in your home, and possibly lower energy bills since you can set the temperature so that your system runs less when you are not there.

Schedule your annual HVAC tune-up

Annual air conditioner service/check up is important to make sure your system is working efficiently and not wasting energy

Should you turn off your system completely?

Did you know that it is always a better idea to keep your system running longer at lower levels than to shut it off completely? That is because on/off cycles can be energy-consuming. Also, when you turn off your system it is not circulating your indoor air, which can lead to stagnant air and poor indoor air quality.

If you have HVAC problems and you need an assistance with a furnace repair or are looking for a replacement in Ontario, DeMark Home Ontario is here at your service. We provide quick and efficient furnace service and replacement performed by our highly experienced and trained technicians.

Why Is My Energy Bill So High

The winter time means less sunlight, the bitter cold, and with this comes an increase on your monthly energy bill.

Canada is known for its cold and snowy winters, so for us Canadians to cope with the weather we of course need the use of some of our household appliances. Whether it be your furnace, your water heater, space heater, light bulbs, etc. your household appliances all see great use during the winter months. You need to keep yourself and your family warm, keep your pipes from freezing, keep the lights on in order to see during the minimal hours of daylight. From all this energy consumption it’s quite obvious why your energy bill would increase, but there are a handful of things you can do to keep your expenses as low as possible.

How much are my appliances costing me?

Most homeowners don’t know how much their appliances are truly costing them, but that’s okay because we’re here to tell you. Knowing the cost that goes into each use of a household tool will help you regulate how often you use them and will make for efficient use, which thus lowers the cost of your energy bill.

Tea Kettle: When boiling water, only boil as much as you will use. Boiling two litres of water will cost you about 45 cent on your energy bill.

Electric Blanket: An electric blanket typically uses about 1.5 kWh for four hours of use, which amounts to about 40 cents.

Light Bulbs: Daylight hours can be scarce during the winter season, so lights are obviously used quite often. Lighting generally takes up about 8 percent of your energy bill. Buying

New energy saving LED light bulbs to replace the decade old incandescent lights can save you around $20 a year for every light bulb you replace.

Space Heater: If an electric space heater operates for 5 hours it can cost around $3. If used daily then this can amount to upwards of $80. Wearing warmer clothing or using a blanket can be some simple solutions to save you money.

Drying machine: Dryers are used more often in the winter season since the cold winter doesn’t allow for hang drying in the outdoors. Sadly, drying machines suck energy right up and that is then reflected on your energy bill. The average households spends about $1 per load to operate the dryer.

Tips to minimize drying machine usage:

  • Use your drying machine only when drying full loads instead of singular or not many items. Drying clothes outdoors as well as efficient dryer use can save up to $130 a year.
  • When separating loads in the dryer machine, separate them by weight. T-shirts take far less time to dry than sweatshirts or towels do.
  • Hang drying your laundry indoors is also an option when weather conditions are messy. After hang drying your clothing you can use the dryer to get rid of wrinkles and get the rest of the job done on a half cycle.
  • Clean your dryer’s lint filter to allow for the machine to use less power and work as efficiently as possible.
  • Use the spin cycle feature on your washing machine so that some moisture and water can be removed from the clothes before they go in the dryer.

A huge way to save money on your energy bill is to make sure that all of your households appliances are running efficiently. These appliances include your water heater, furnace, air conditioner, dehumidifier, duct system, blower fan, heat pump as well as any of the other HVAC appliances in your home. Making sure that these appliances are well maintained by a trained technician will save tons of energy all year round.

If you are in need of HVAC appliance replacement or repair, DeMark Home Ontario is exactly what you need. We provide efficient and quick HVAC replacement performed by our highly trained and experienced technicians. Oversized Furnace Causes Short Cycling

Installing an oversized furnace in your home can lead to a number of problems, with short cycling being at the top of the list.

A common held belief amongst homeowners is that the bigger the furnace, the better it will perform. The truth is that this is simply not the case. An oversized furnace can be the source of many of your HVAC problems, such as a loud air conditioner or a substantial increase on your utility bills. Problems such as these are a very clear indication that it is time to replace your trouble causing oversized furnace with brand new furnace that is perfect for your home.

Short cycling

A furnace that is too large for the home operates with exceptionally fast heating cycles. Fast heating cycles make for an overwhelming amount of wear and tear on the heating equipment, and thus often results in furnace breakdowns. This happens because the set temperature is reached very quickly, and the furnace then shuts off. Because the heating components are significantly increased, constant maintenance and repairs will become necessary. Switching from your currently oversized furnace to a new one that fits your home will ensure that the system operates efficiently and will increase the lifespan of your heating system.

Inefficient Operation

When your heating system is forced to constantly start and stop because of an oversized furnace, you end up wasting both fuel and money on your utility bill. An oversized furnace is unable to operate at its peak efficiency level and results in tons of wasted energy. The only way to fix such a problem is to get rid of the oversized unit as a whole and have a trained technician install a brand new furnace unit. When heating your home, an oversized furnace only reaches a steady temperature by the time that your home is already heated to your preferred temperature, so most of its operating is done in the warm up stage.

Inconsistency

An oversized furnace system makes it so that heat only comes in through the vents for short periods of time, which results in a room either feeling to cold or too hot during the heating process. One room in your home may feel warm, while others don’t receive the same amount of heat. The furnace may seem like it never runs long enough to properly heat your home. A resolution to this problem is to have a professional to calculate your current heating space which will guarantee that your new furnace will be properly sized and fulfill your heating expectations. If incorrect calculations are made then the BTU capacity rating and IFUE efficiency rating will also be inaccurate, so the goal of a properly sized furnace will not be met.

Looking to replace your oversized furnace? Look no further than DeMark Home Ontario. We provide efficient and quick furnace replacement performed by our highly trained and experienced technicians. Give us a call at 647-847-2998 or fill out our online request form and we will be happy to assist you with your request.

What To Do If Your Air Conditioner Runs All The Time

It’s perfectly normal for an AC to run frequently during a hot summer day, but if your air conditioner runs all the time then that’s a sign ...
