Stay Cool During a Power Outage

The summer season makes for heat waves to be an inevitable problem, but there are ways that you can stay cool during a power outage.

Heat waves will leave you being, hot, sticky, and uncomfortable all day, but sometimes that’s not even the worst of it. It’s a frequent occurrence that a heat wave results in a power outage. The reason behind this is that when temperatures are constantly above 30 degrees celsius there is a high usage of air conditioners which causes an overload in the power grid, thus producing a power outage. Even without the use of your air conditioner there are ways that you can stay cool during a power outage. Here is how you can keep your home cool, your food cold, and your appliances and electronics in working condition.

Keeping your home cool

  • Ensure that doors and windows remain CLOSED. To maintain a cool temperature in your home it is best to close any windows, doors, or passages that let the outside air into your home. When leaving your home try to have the door open for as little time as possible.
  • Keep the sun out of your home. Even with the doors and windows closed, the heat and light from the sun can still enter your home unless you close all the shades, blinds, and curtains in your home.
  • Take a cold shower or bath. Cooling off in a cold shower or bath can be just what you needed during a power outage in the summer heat. When you leave the shower you should air dry your body and leave your hair wet to stay cool for as long as you can.

Keeping food cold

  • Keep the fridge door closed. The inside of the fridge will stay colder the less that the door is opened. During a power outage try to eat foods that don’t need to be refrigerated. If you do need to open the fridge you should know what you’re going to take out before opening the door.
  • Keeping your fridge or freezer full with food will keep the inside temperature colder than it would be with a half full or empty one. A freezer that is full with food will keep food frozen for roughly two days. On the other hand, if it is only half full then the food will only be frozen for one day. An unopened fridge will be able to keep food cold for four hours.
  • Your fridge should not reach temperatures above 4.5 degrees celsius, while your freezer should be kept below the temperature of -18 degrees celsius. These temperatures can be maintained with the use of dry ice, ice bags, and an appliance thermometer to measure the temperature.

Protecting your electronics

  • Install surge suppressors in your home. Surge suppressor power strips make sure that your electronics do not fry when the power is turned on again. These helpful devices can be purchased at most hardware stores. You can also have a whole house surge suppressor installed. These will protect your home’s whole electrical system from being affected by power surges and are installed to your home’s electrical panel.
  • Back up all of your files. Backing up your files will ensure that you don’t lose any important files or information in the event of a power outage. If a thunderstorm or heat wave is in the weather forecast, make sure to save and back up your work before your home loses power.

If you have any further questions regarding power outages or any of your other HVAC needs, please don’t hesitate to contact DeMark Home Ontario.
