Benefits of a Modulating Furnace

A modulating furnace will greatly improve your home’s energy efficiency with its multi-speed blowers and fluctuating gas valve features.

Increased Comfort

A modulating furnace’s ability to always adjust itself results in an even distribution of heat throughout the home, creating an exceptionally comfortable living space. You will no longer have to deal with the lack of consistency that’s often experienced by homeowners with traditional furnaces. If your home currently has some rooms which are warmer than others, or some which are barely warm at all, you can expect this problem to vanish once you have a new modulating furnace in your home. Even in rapidly changing weather conditions, a modulating furnace will maintain the desired temperature.

Benefits of a Modulating FurnaceSave on Energy

A modulating furnace saves on energy by only running at full speed when it’s necessary, unlike a single-stage furnace which only has one speed.. Instead, a modulating furnace will adjust its gas output and blower speed to accommodate to the needs of the home. This results in lower energy usage as well as lower utility bills for the homeowner. Over time, the decrease in the monthly utility bills will cancel out the initial investment in the new piece of equipment. Modulating furnaces do have a higher initial cost than the traditional type, but the cost savings over five years can triple the amount you spend on the upgrade.

Longer Life Span & Greater Durability

Another cost benefit of modulating furnaces is that they last longer than their traditional counterpart. You can also expect a higher level of craftsmanship with these units reducing the need for service calls. A 5-year warranty is the standard with modulating furnaces.

Maintains Desired Temperature with Precision

With its multi-speed blowers, a modulating furnace can make small adjustments to maintain the temperature set on your home’s thermostat at all times. This type of furnace is extremely precise in its heating so that you have a perfectly comfortable home environment.

Quiet Operation

The rather loud noises you hear when a traditional furnace kicks on will no longer be a problem as modulating furnaces operate at a lower speed, but more frequently. Your family can expect a peaceful sleep throughout the night without the rude awakening of your furnace’s operation.

Improve the comfort in your home and save on energy with a brand new modulating furnace! If you have any further questions regarding modulating furnaces or any of your other HVAC needs, don’t hesitate to contact us at any time. Our highly trained and experienced technicians are more than prepared to assist you with any of your HVAC problems. What is a Condensing Tankless Water Heater

When choosing a new water heater, it’s important to know the difference between a non-condensing and condensing tankless water heater.

Before we explain exactly what the difference between a non-condensing and condensing tankless is, it’s important that you understand, first and foremost, what a tankless water heater is. A traditional water heater stores hot water in its tank, but a tankless water heater does not have a tank. Instead, a tankless heater heats the water as its being used. Therefore, a tankless water heater provides you with an infinite supply of hot water, while a traditional water heater limits your hot water usage to its tank’s capacity.

Condensing TanklessCondensing Tankless Water Heaters

Condensing tankless water heaters are more efficient than their non-condensing counterparts. Let’s find out why. Condensing heaters have two heat exchangers, while non-condensing heaters only have one. The secondary heat exchanger reuses exhaust gas that heats the water. Before the water enters into the main heat exchanger, it has already been exposed to the heat from the exhaust gasses which allows the cold water to arrive at its desired temperature. Condensing heaters recycle the extra heat from the exhaust gasses and only vent it when it’s no longer useful for heating, which is at around 37 degrees celsius. This process of recycling heat allows for condensing units to have an efficiency level as high as 98%.

The ventilation for condensing heaters is not as expensive as for non-condensing heaters because their exhaust gasses are not nearly as hot. A standard PVC pipe can be used as venting for condensing units as it is able to withstand the heat and corrosiveness of the exhaust gasses.

Non-Condensing Tankless Water Heaters

Condensing units utilize their exhaust gasses to reheat the water by directing them inside the unit, non-condensing units vent the gasses directly outside. Non-condensing units heat the water using the gas burner and then vent the gasses out immediately. Due to this, it loses out on about 20% of the heat that would otherwise heat the water.

The exhaust gasses for non-condensing units can get extremely hot, up to 150 degrees celsius, and this requires much more specific venting materials than what is necessary for condensing units. The exhaust gasses from a non-condensing unit must be vented through heat resistant, corrosion resistant material. For this reason, It would cost significantly more to install venting for non-condensing units than for condensing units.

Which type should I get for my home?

We, as well as most people, would say that condensing tankless heaters are more effective and efficient at their job. Non-condensing units are less expensive to purchase than condensing units, but ultimately a condensing units can save you money in the long run due to their much higher level of operating efficiency. Condensing units are 10% to 15% more efficient than their non-condensing counterparts. A non-condensing unit would also come with some additional expenses related to the venting necessary for these units.

A non-condensing heater is slightly smaller than the condensing type, which allows for it to fit into smaller spaces. Non-condensing types require minimal maintenance by a professional technician, but do require an indoor combustion air. Condensing types, on the other hand, will require annual maintenance by a technician, but do not require indoor combustion air.

Essentially, there is a reason why both types of water heaters are available on the market as each have their own strengths and can adhere to different people’s needs and circumstances.

Water Heater Replacement Cost

Water heater replacement cost can vary depending on the type of water heater, tank capacity, and a few other factors.

Your water heater is a very important piece of equipment to your home and your family’s home comfort. You use it every single day when taking a shower, doing the dishes, or doing the laundry. If your looking to replace your current water heater, one of the pieces of information you’d like to know first is the water heater replacement cost. Below you’ll find all of the relevant pricing information you’ll need before you choose the water heater that aligns with your budget and needs.

Water Heater Replacement CostCost distribution: Equipment vs. Labour

Water heater replacement cost involves the cost for both the equipment as well as the labour involved with installing the new equipment and getting rid of your old water heater. The cost distribution is 73% on equipment and 27% on labour. The average costs for a standard water heater tank are $850 for equipment and $315 for labour.

The cost for replacing a water heater can range from $120 to $8,300, with the average cost being $1,500.

Water heater options:

Traditional Tank Water Heaters

Traditional water heaters have a tank which stores water and is fueled by either gas or electricity. The water tanks can hold between 20 to 80 gallons depending on their size. Compared to their tankless counterpart, traditional water heaters have a lower upfront cost but maintenance and operation costs are higher. The cost of a traditional water heater can range between $950 to $2,100, with the average cost being $1,310.

Traditional Water Heater Features & Their Impact on Cost

The price of a traditional water heater can vary greatly depending on the size of the unit, with larger capacity units costing the most. Water heaters that are more energy efficient will also cost more, but will save money on operation due to their energy efficient operation. The most energy efficient water heaters are typically Energy Star certified. Government rebates may also help to lower the cost of an energy efficient water heater. If there is any additional work that needs to be done to complete the installation up to code or to make room for the new unit, then the cost will also increase.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are fueled by gas or electricity in the same way that traditional heaters are, but they do not store any water within the unit. Tankless water heaters heat the water on-demand as its needed. This makes tankless heaters more environmentally friendly than traditional water heaters. They also have the benefit of being able to provide you with endless hot water, A tankless water heater will have a higher upfront cost, but a lower operation cost. The cost of a tankless water heater can range between $2,045 to $5,900, with the average cost being $2,980. On-demand tankless units can conserve between 24% to 34% more energy than tank water heaters in homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water. The higher cost of a tankless water heater will be paid off in the long run due to its lower cost of operation and higher level of efficiency.

Natural gas water heaters tend to be more expensive to run than electric water heaters. If you’re thinking of switching from an electric to a natural gas water heater, it’s important that you factor in the cost of running gas lines. As electricity prices continue to increase across Canada, it would be in your best interest to compare the cost of running a natural gas or electric water heater in your area.

Labour and Equipment Removal Costs:

A significant component of the water heater replacement cost is the amount you pay for the labour involved from a licenced and trained professional technician. Technicians can choose to charge a flat rate or by the hour for the labour work involved with installing your new water heater. Labour costs can include charges for addition any electrical, gas or plumbing connections for your new water heater. There may also be a disposal fee for removing and disposing of your old equipment.

Factors That Impact Water Heater Replacement Cost:

  • Changing fuel sources
  • Changing from traditional to tankless
  • Amount of work necessary to bring plumbing connections up to code
  • Size of the water tank
  • Cost of the permit
  • Length of the warranty
  • Energy efficient certification
  • Any other special or upgraded features

SAME DAY AND NEXT DAY SERVICE AND INSTALLATION AVAILABLE

Furnace Buying Guide

Choosing a new furnace can be a tough decision, so we hope this furnace buying guide will provide you with all the information you need to make the right choice.

Like all machines, furnaces get worn out with time and after years of use they reach a point where they no longer work like they used to. Typically, furnace problems start to arise after the 10 year mark. Finding a replacement for your old furnace can be tricky as there are many things to consider. Luckily, our furnace buying guide will provide you all you need to know in order to buy the furnace that’s right for your home.

A new high efficiency furnace will rid you of all your old heating problems and provide you with an elevated level of comfort at home. For the environmentally conscious, high efficiency furnaces pollute less than old units. They are also more energy efficient, will save you money on your utility bill, and have numerous other benefits.

Furnace Buying Guide: What to consider when choosing a new furnace

Best Furnace buying guide 2019Efficiency level

Most furnaces that are used and installed today are gas furnaces. The efficiency level of a gas furnace is determined by how efficiently it converts gas into heat. A furnace’s annual fuel-utilization-efficiency (AFUE) rating determines its efficiency as a percentage. The higher the AFUE rating, the more efficient a furnace is.

The price of a furnace largely depends on its AFUE rating. Higher AFUE rated furnaces will be more expensive, but will also result in lower emissions and less wasted energy. A furnace is considered high efficiency if its AFUE rating is 90% or higher. Furnace efficiency levels can reach as high as 97% where the unit is nearly perfectly efficiency. Although a 90% efficiency furnace will cost significantly more than an 80% efficiency furnace, the difference in price will be paid off over the lifetime of the furnace due to the energy savings provided by high efficiency units. In fact, you can even save money in the long run by choosing a high efficiency unit.

Size of the furnace

When choosing a new furnace, you should be sure that the one you choose is the right size for your home. A furnace being too small or too big is a problem and will result in inefficient or inadequate heating. A furnace that is too small will not provide your home with enough heat. A furnace that is too big will cycle on and off constantly, which puts strain and wear on the parts, and also wastes energy.

A load calculation should be performed on your home by a professional HVAC technician to determine the right furnace size for your home. A load calculation takes into account the climate and size, construction, and design of your home. Once this has been done by a trusted HVAC technician, you can be certain that your new furnace is the proper size for your home.

Energy Star certified

Buying an energy star certified furnace can save you money. An energy star certified gas furnace uses 6% less energy on average than standard models. Heating your home comprises 61% of your home energy usage and has the most potential for cutting your utility bill. Saving energy reduces your carbon footprint and saves you money.

Programmable thermostats

A programmable thermostat allows you to adjust the temperature in your home according to programmed settings giving you the ability to schedule temperatures changes throughout the day. Smart thermostats, like the NEST thermostat, which operate through an app on your mobile device, give you the ability to adjust the temperature of your home remotely when you’re away. If a programmable thermostat is used correctly you can reduce your heating cost by about 10 percent.

Furnace Maintenance

When choosing a new furnace for your home, look for one that includes a service plan allows for regular inspection with discounts on any repairs, as well as a labour warranty. The prices for maintenance can greatly vary. When renting a furnace through DeMark Home Ontario, repairs, maintenance, and labour are included free of charge.

Features of a Gas Furnace

Dual Heat Exchanger

Heat exchangers draw heat from the burned gas. Furnaces with high-efficiency levels have two heat exchangers which allow it to draw more heat from the burned gas. After the exhaust gas passes through the primary exchanger, it then passes through the secondary exchanger which absorbs much of the remaining heat from the gases. The gases condense to form water and carbon dioxide as they cool. The water drips out through a drain pipe, and the remaining gases are vented to the outdoors through a plastic pipe.

Air Filters

Air filters reduce the amount of dust and debris that makes its way into the air you’re breathing in your home. They are particularly useful for people with respiratory problems such as asthma. A furnace air filter can be either an electrostatic filter, which uses electricity to trap particles, or it can be a high-efficiency particulate-arresting (HEPA) filter. HEPA filters remove 99.97% of airborne particles that are equal to, or greater than 0.3 microns in size.

Variable-speed blowers

When less heat is needed, variable speed blowers can operate at a slower rate, making less noise. Having a furnace with variable-speed blowers will result in fewer drafts in your home.

Variable Heat Output

This feature increases both comfort and efficiency by varying the amount of heat delivered by the furnace between two levels. Alternating between the two levels is done automatically by the furnace. This feature allows for heat to be delivered more continuously than with a single heat output level. The variable heat output feature is included on some furnaces with variable-speed blowers.

Zoned Heating

This feature controls airflow to distribute different amounts of heat to different parts of your home. It does this by using multiple thermostats, a series of dampers, and a sophisticated central control system. Zoned heating is particularly useful in larger homes.

Ignition System

It was very common in the past for furnaces to have a pilot light, a flame that is always burning waiting for a common to ignite the burners. New furnaces have gotten rid of the pilot light and instead use a more efficient ignition method, such as hot-surface, direct spark, or intermittent ignition.

Warranty

Lower efficiency furnaces tend to have shorter warranties than their high efficiency counterparts. Most new furnaces come with a 10 year manufacturer limited parts warranty as well as a 20 year manufacturer warranty on the heat exchanger which is the core of the furnace, and the most expensive part to repair or replace.

Start your winter of on the right track by treating your home to a new central heating system. Our highly trained and experienced technicians are more than prepared to assist you with any of your HVAC problems. What is Furnace Short Cycling?

Furnace short cycling often indicates that there’s a serious problem with your home’s heating system.

Furnace short cyclingYour home’s furnace should turn off and on at regular intervals in order to reach the desired temperature set on your thermostat. Furnace short cycling refers to a system malfunction where the system will turn on for only a few seconds and then turn off again, only to repeat this process over and over. This will not allow for your home to ever reach the desired temperature and means that there’s something that needs fixing in the furnace system.

The potential causes for furnace short cycling are:

Dirty Air Filters

A dirty air filter could be causing your furnace to short cycle due not enough airflow. Furnace air filters should be replaced monthly for one inch thick filters or once every six months for thick media filters. Using the wrong filter could also cause short cycling. One inch pleated filters are often too constraining for most furnaces.

Dirty Air Conditioner Coils

Right above your furnace unit is an air conditioner coil that absorbs heat from the air. If this air conditioner coil gets dirty, is filled with debris or dust, then the airflow becomes restricted, which will cause your furnace to short cycle. This air conditioner coil should be cleaned to remove all dirt and debris in order to solve the problem.

System Overheating

Furnaces are built with safety devices in place that will prevent the unit from overheating. Once the furnace’s temperature gets too hot, the system will turn off to prevent any damage from occurring. There is also the chance that there is a crack in your furnace’s heat exchanger which would cause the unit to short cycle. If you believe that your furnace is short cycling due to overheating, you should call a licensed HVAC technician to take a look at the problem.

Improper Placement of Thermostat

The location of your thermostat is important to your furnace and air conditioner operating properly. Improper placement of your thermostat could lead to short cycling. A thermostat should be located on an inner wall of a part of your home that is frequently used. Do not place your thermostat near a window, on an outer wall, or close to a draft.

To check whether the location of your thermostat is the root of the problem you can place a cardboard shield around the thermostat. If the short cycling problem goes away then you should move your thermostat to a better location. It is best for a professional HVAC technician to relocate your thermostat.

Blocked Air Vents

If there is any furniture or items on top of or very close to your air vent registers then there might be a problem. Items too close to air vent registers can restrict airflow, which results in furnace short cycling. Remove any furniture or items away from air vent registers to allow for adequate air flow. You should also open up all the air vents for proper air circulation.

What To Do If Your Air Conditioner Runs All The Time

It’s perfectly normal for an AC to run frequently during a hot summer day, but if your air conditioner runs all the time then that’s a sign ...
