How to Clean AC Condenser Coil

Cleaning your condenser coil allows for smooth and efficient AC operation during the summer and can help reduce your utility costs.

How to Clean AC Condenser CoilOne of the most important components of an air conditioning system is the condenser coil. Your air conditioner’s condenser is contained in the large, square unit outside your house. Cleaning the condenser coil will help the unit cool more efficiently. It is important to clean the coils annually.

Your air conditioner’s condenser coil is essentially taking the heat from inside your home and transferring it to the outdoors. When this AC component is not cleaned regularly, it results in a buildup of dust and debris which does not allow for it to operate efficiently. When the condenser is not operating efficiently, your utility costs go up and the condenser’s operation will get worse over time.

Steps to clean the condenser coil:

The air conditioner unit should be powered down before starting the cleaning process.

Prior to cleaning the condenser coil, remove plants and other debris around the unit. The coil should have a few feet of unoccupied space around it to allow for proper operation.

First of all, visually inspect the coil for any noticeable damage. If you see significant damage, we recommend placing a call to your local HVAC professionals for help.

Condenser CoilGrass or lint should be removed from the aluminum fins or louvers with an old brush or whisk broom. Brush in the same direction as the fins when cleaning them.

Straighten the coil fins with a fin comb. Over time coil fins within the condenser can bend. If you notice your coil fins are bent, use an adjustable fin comb to straighten them out.

Use a coil cleaner solution to clean the coils. Coil cleaner is inexpensive and can be purchased online or at your local hardware store. Wet the coil with coil cleaner. Take your hose and gently wet the coils to further remove excess debris. Next, spray a generous amount of foaming coil cleaner onto the coils in a back and forth motion. The coil cleaner will begin to foam and start collecting dust and debris.

Wash away the coil cleaner with water once the coil cleaner has sat for five to ten minutes, gently rinse away the cleaner with water. Be sure to hit the fins straight on in a slow back and forth motion to avoid bending the fins.
