How to tell if your Central Air Conditioner needs refrigerant refill

Freon is the term used by most everyone to refer to the refrigerant, or coolant, used in many things, from home air conditioner, cooling system in your car, to refrigerators.

So, the air conditioners need refrigerant to cool the air. If there is not enough or too little refrigerant, it will cause air conditioner blow warm air. Technically, refrigerant can last a lifetime, but certain circumstances can cause issues with the coolant supply. It can be due to age of the air conditioner, its wear and tear or accidental damage.

Here are the signs your AC is low on refrigerant:

Your AC is taking longer than normal to cool the home. Refrigerant absorbs the heat in your air. Without enough of it, your air conditioner can’t absorb enough heat to cool the air well.

Ice has built up on copper lines from a/c to indoor coil. If coolant levels are low, the air conditioner’s evaporator coil tends to get too cold, which causes cool refrigerant to flow back the coolant line. This is what causes the ice buildup.

Unusually high electric bills. An air conditioner that’s low on refrigerant has to work much harder to cool down your home, causing the unit to consume more energy.
