Should You Leave AC On For Your Pet?

It is summer and that means rising temperatures and heat waves. Pets are just as prone to heat related complications as us. Pet-owners are always recommended to let even their outdoor pets into the house during times of extreme temperatures.

When the temperature and humidity rise, it becomes crucial to keep our pets comfortable and safe.  Animals cool themselves by panting, a process of exchanging warm air from their lungs for the cooler air outside. This can not be happened when it is hot and humid, which leads to increased risk for heat stress and exhaustion. Leaving the air circulating with fans or, better yet, leaving the air conditioning on will help to keep pets cool and healthy.

Most pet owners and veterinarians recommend leaving an air conditioner on for your pet. When we can’t be home with our animals we want them to be safe and comfortable. If you’re not comfortable about leaving the air conditioner on, then leave a fan running to help in improving indoor air circulation. Basements are typically cooler than the rest of the house, so if your basement is a comfortable place for your pet to be, having them spend time down there during a heat wave is also an option. Close the blinds, shades or drapes, and keep the heat generating lights and appliances turned off. Remove most of the carpets/rugs from your pet’s area to allow them a space to lie on bare tile or wood floors. Also, pets should always have access to fresh water, as they can get dehydrated.
Keeping your pet cool in the summer heat is an important part of responsible pet ownership. Know your pet and how well they deal with heat.  Most pets do just fine in hot weather as long as they have plenty of water, shade and air movement, especially inside pets.
